It's just the element of spells, not a broader discipline. Back home, people are attuned to elements, earth, fire, water, wind, dark, or light. Healing or combat magic aren't picky about what you channel, for the most part.
I don't know about at birth, but it's something innate and not easily changed. I've heard of only a few who can call upon more than one element, and then only through rather extraordinary circumstances.
