Eh? But, that's the charm point! [ the part that makes the nickname?!
it's a make or break, x'rhun? ] Heh heh. So did you get some insight? [ he says as mostly a joke. but even with that said, he obeys the orders swiftly. he grabs one end of the harness and begins to try and click everything into place.
for the record, it's not 100% right and it seems like it's set a bit tighter than he's used to, but he soon gives a thumbs up! ]
You and I have very different definitions of “charm”.
[ But for whatever it may be worth, he’s not terribly offended. It’s the first time in a long time that someone’s given him a nickname, as… inelegant as it may be.
As to the insight, he hums a little, as if to say “Maybe.” And it’s soon proven that his insight is correct, considering the way Vane jumps right in to do as he’s told. ]
Close. Tug on that bit there to loosen it some, and once you’re comfortable, we’ll be on our way.
Eh? I think you just have to hear it a few times before you really get into it.
[ says vane, who doesn't actually know how accurate or true that is. still, he doesn't seem to deliberate over it. instead, he focuses on loosening some of the straps. when it seems sufficient, he turns back over with a nod. ] You're pretty good at explaining stuff, huh? But, ah...
Is it already time for "take off"? [ he's... always wanted to use that term. still, as ready as he is to start pressing buttons or moving things around, he seems to ... stop himself mid-way, if just to turn to his companion for approval. he... probably shouldn't just be doing everything haphazardly, right? ]
This isn't my first time acting as an instructor, though usually I teach magic and not... space ships.
[ Oh, thank gods Vane was able to show a little restraint before he just wildly started jamming buttons. It's bad enough that X'rhun started this little endeavor with a joke about dying, but he doesn't need to go into this flight with frayed nerves of his own. ]
Easy, I will explain as we go. I am all about practical experience. So to start, you will hit that button- [ and he points to said button ] -which will ignite the engines. From there, I will steer for a bit on my own to guide us away from the station. Be sure to watch what I do.
What!? So you really were an instructor of some sort!?
[ that's... incredible. then again, experienced tended to show in others, and it'd be a complete lie to say that x'rhun didn't carry himself in a manner befitting of that. even if it's just impressions and gut feelings for vane. still, he seems comforted by that knowledge (magic specialty or not...)
hence, he follows carefully. he presses the button with a bit of oomph, obviously enthused at the prospect. ] Done and done! I'll watch you reeeeaaaal carefully! [ but, after a few moments, vane speaks up once more.
akin to a pupil raising his hand, he inquires as if speaking to a class. ] But, instructor—
What's "emotional compatibility"? [ he might be remembering the terms all wrong, but listen... ]
[ No one has actually called him “instructor” before, not even the few people he’s taught red magic to. It’s a much better nickname than “Rhuny” for sure, but it surprises him all the same. He grins, wide and amused, as he slowly guides the little ship away from its port. ]
Ah, that is where the tricky part of this little endeavor comes in. The ship will respond to both of our emotions in tandem, so the calmer we both are, the better it will fly.
[ he can tell by movements alone that the other was methodical in which buttons he pressed or in what manner he steered. enough where they're finally in the clear, it seems. "seems" being the keyword. as x'rhun begins to explain, vane already feels the swell of excitement that starts to build and the ship seems to sputter a bit to it in response. it even seems to shift the course a little... lop-sided?
but, nothing too bad so far. he gives a firm nod. ] The calmer, huh?
[ vane seems to hum deep in thought before: ] How do you feel right now?
[ There's the rub, it seems, because good emotions can send them into a tailspin just as easily as bad ones. The ship sputters a bit, and X'rhun cuts a glance at his copilot. ]
I am fine, but I've passed the point of nervousness or wonder. [ Well, not entirely true, but he's gotten good at tamping them down in order to get from point A to point B safely. ]
But you must find this all rather thrilling, I imagine.
it doesn't. instead, he still doesn't seem to really get the memo. at the other's conclusion, he gives a slight sideways smile. ] Yeah! You could tell? [ ... it's evident for just how the ship seems to move in turn to him. there's also a certain level of restlessness exhibited in his stance. his foot tapping along to his enthusiasm. ]
But, uh... what do you normally think about to be so calm?
[ The boy means well, he imagines, even if he is about as sharp as a sackful of hammers. It's... endearing? ]
I traveled a lot, back home. There are many places that I found to be calming just by being there, so I try to imagine them. A still lake. A quiet, snow-covered field. Silent, long-forgotten ruins. The memories ground me and help keep me level, in spite of the newness of the situation.
You feel the way the ship shudders? It's reacting to your excitement.
vane seems to perk up at that. an action that gets the ship to rise once, and dip a bit. he feels his stomach drop a bit, recoiling under his own blunder. ] Er, I— I think you might be right. Ahaha...
[ but, as soon as it settles, so does his thoughts. they begin gently sorting itself. to begin with, while easily excited, vane's thoughts were far from tumultuous or disarrayed. he remembers hiking. the mountains. the tree they encountered there and the beautiful flowers they produced, and of course...
somehow instead of places— ] Do memories of food count?

[ He knows his name can be kind of a mouthful, but surely X'rhun (sheh-run) isn't all that hard to say after a little practice. ]
I don't see why it wouldn't matter. It gives me some insight to your character. Questionable nicknaming abilities aside.
First, you'll want to fasten that harness on your seat there.
